Montreal, Quebec’s DEAD BRAIN CELLS should require no introduction. These legendary Canadian thrashers date back to 1986, when they established a core lineup of Phil Dakin (bass/vocals), Eddie Shahini and Gerry Ouellette (guitars), and Jeff St-Louis (drums). After recording a seven-song demo at Harmonie Studio, the quartet landed a coveted slot opening for Slayer and Razor at the Montreal Paladium—securing a recording contract with the iconic Combat Records all within a mere nine months of existence!

The result was the socio-political, crossover tech-thrash assault of their classic debut Dead Brain Cells (1987), followed by the increasingly complex, sci-fi-themed creativity of Universe (1989)—albums still lauded by fans to this day. Touring and additional recording continued into 1990 and 1991 as DBC worked toward a third full-length. Unfortunately, Combat Records failed to recognize the obvious potential in the band’s new material and parted ways with the group.

Despite this setback, DEAD BRAIN CELLS carried on writing and rehearsing in hopes of landing a new record deal. However, with the shifting tides of the music industry, such an opportunity never came to fruition. The band eventually came to a close following the tragic passing of guitarist Gerry Ouellette in 1994.

The remaining members would later reunite in the early 2000s, reissuing and digitally distributing their material. Shahini and Dakin remained semi-active with new members, performing a number of sporadic live shows throughout the years.

Now, an astonishing 30 years after the band’s last studio session, Divebomb Records is honored to present a series of three reissues covering DBC’s complete discography—concluding with The Demo Anthology: an 18-song collection of archival rarities recorded between 1986 and 1991.
