Detailed Description
Germany’s Piledriver may have only left behind one full-length album, but Letters of Steel remains an intriguing relic from the early days of the country’s heavy rock scene. Originally released in 1980 on GAMA’s Sri Lanka imprint, the album straddles the line between the hard-edged boogie of the ‘70s and the emerging sounds of traditional heavy metal. While it never veers into full-throttle aggression, the band’s energetic performance and melodic sensibilities make for an engaging listen.

Opening with the riff-driven swagger of Piledriver, the album quickly establishes itself as a no-frills, hard-rocking affair. Tracks like Wizard and Hell Rider push the tempo into proto-metal territory, with sharp guitar work and a driving rhythm section that nods toward the early NWOBHM movement. Elsewhere, Hobo and Border Line reveal a more diverse approach, incorporating elements of blues rock and even hints of new wave. New England, an instrumental highlight, showcases the band’s knack for harmony-driven guitar work, standing out as a testament to their musicality.

Though frontman Martin Metzger’s vocal delivery may not be the most commanding, his raw and unpolished approach adds a certain charm that fits the band’s straightforward style. Piledriver’s strength lies in their ability to craft memorable, riff-heavy songs with a sense of melody that keeps Letters of Steel feeling fresh despite its deep roots in ‘70s hard rock.

Shortly after the album’s release, the band’s momentum was cut short, and Piledriver faded into obscurity. However, with this remastered edition, Letters of Steel finds new life, offering listeners a glimpse into an exciting, transitional period in German rock history. Fans of early heavy metal and classic hard rock will find plenty to enjoy here, making this reissue a welcome addition to any collection.
