A Silhouette in Splinters (2005) is the third full-length album by San Francisco-based black metal project Leviathan. Marking a stark departure from the project's earlier releases—known for their distorted guitars and relentless tempos—this album delves entirely into dark ambient territory. Recorded between 2000 and 2002, the six-track collection reveals a more focused and introspective side of Leviathan, showcasing Wrest’s (Jef Whitehead) ability to craft deeply haunting and immersive soundscapes.
Leviathan was founded in 1998 as a solo endeavor by Whitehead, who operates under the pseudonym Wrest. In the project, he performs all instruments and vocals himself. Wrest has noted in interviews that drums are his primary instrument, having played them the longest. He also writes, records, and performs all material for his other project, Lurker of Chalice.
