Though Self Hypnosis is a new entity, its members are no strangers to the British extreme Doom scene. The project was initiated by Kris Clayton, founder of the experimental Doom outfit Camel of Doom, which transitioned from its stoner roots to a more avant-garde style, culminating in 2016's Terrestrial (Solitude Productions). Initially conceptualized as the next Camel of Doom album, the material's experimental nature led Kris to rebrand under the name Self Hypnosis to shed preconceived notions tied to his former work.
To bring the project to life, Kris enlisted Greg Chandler, co-founder of UK Doom pioneers Esoteric, whose expertise in production and musicianship made him an ideal collaborator. Kris and Greg share a history, as Kris was a guitarist in Esoteric's lineup from 2007–2009 and rejoined in 2019. Drummer Tom Vallely (Sanctus Nex, Lychgate), a veteran performer and a key contributor to Terrestrial, joined as a session musician for the recording sessions.
Contagion of Despair: A Sonic Journey
The album was recorded at Greg’s Priory Studios using innovative techniques, such as wiring the entire building to create expansive recording spaces and incorporating digitized live drums to infuse an '80s hip-hop sub-bass groove. These elements combine to craft a unique blend of Doom and non-Doom influences, resulting in a cohesive Prog-Doom masterpiece.
The album’s diverse soundscape includes:
*“Divided”: A progressive track described as "if The Prodigy made a mash-up of Yes and Meshuggah."
*“Contagion”: A rebellious, multi-tempo noise-fest that reflects the band's raw energy and anger.
Lyrically and thematically, Contagion of Despair serves as a dark critique of societal decline, channeling the focus, clarity, and passion of seasoned Doom musicians.
Influences and Philosophy
Musical inspirations for the album range widely, from Death and Godflesh to The Prodigy, Yes, and Genesis. The band also draws from experimental acts like Godspeed You! Black Emperor, Laibach, and Melvins. The title Contagion of Despair was inspired by a radio discussion contrasting the "contagion of hope" with its sober antithesis—a slower descent into chaos. The band’s name, Self Hypnosis, reflects a state of heightened mindfulness and awareness, aligning with the introspective nature of their music.
For those eager to experience this synthesis of Doom, progressive, and experimental styles, Contagion of Despair offers a sonic journey through the darker recesses of the underground.
