Detailed Description

Something monumental is brewing in Japan, and it’s not a kaiju battle—it’s the unstoppable rise of Tokyo’s Coven. This powerhouse of traditional heavy metal has been quietly amassing a devoted following with a trail of demos, singles, and their stellar 2017 release, The Advent EP. Released by Finland’s Svart Records on CD and vinyl, and by Heavy Chains on cassette, this four-track gem is a testament to Coven’s mastery of the genre.

From the outset, The Advent establishes itself as a celebration of all things heavy metal. The band delivers razor-sharp twin guitar harmonies and intricate melodies, supported by a rhythm section that oozes energy and precision. The bass lines recall the fluid, driving style of Steve Harris, while the drums are a relentless engine of power. Tying it all together is the unique charm of frontwoman Taka, whose low-in-the-mix Japanese vocals lend the EP an unmistakable identity. Her delivery is captivating, adding a cultural flair that feels both refreshing and authentic.

The EP opens with the triumphant “Brave Warriors,” a six-minute journey that feels shorter thanks to its dynamic composition. A dramatic cymbal wash and escalating guitar lines build to an explosion of pure heavy metal glory. The song’s galloping riffs and searing solos call to mind the best of Enforcer, Blackslash, and Starblind. Coven’s ability to blend melody and power is on full display here, setting a high bar for what’s to come.

“Wings of Glory” takes the EP to even greater heights with its irresistibly catchy dual guitar riff and bouncy, groove-laden bass line. The track is an instant classic, evoking comparisons to modern NWOTHM benchmarks like Blackslash’s “Rock and Roll” and Enforcer’s “Midnight Vice.” The fiery guitar solo at the midpoint is a highlight, a dazzling display of skill and passion that leaves listeners hungry for more.

The EP’s diversity shines with “Karma,” a brooding, bass-heavy track that ventures into thrash territory. Its doomy, palm-muted riffs and mysterious chants give way to an electrifying surge of intensity, showcasing Coven’s ability to push the boundaries of traditional metal while staying true to their roots.

Closing out the EP is the power ballad “Scream For Tomorrow,” a slow-burning anthem that builds from a serene clean-guitar intro to a stormy, riff-driven climax. The track is packed with soaring leads, heartfelt vocals, and a triumphant energy that lingers long after the final note.

Coven’s The Advent is a masterclass in traditional heavy metal, blending classic influences with a fresh, modern perspective. Each track is a showcase of their technical prowess and knack for memorable songwriting. As fans eagerly await a full-length release, The Advent stands as a triumphant declaration that Coven is a force to be reckoned with.
