GOREFEST - Soul Survivor (12" Gatefold LP on Blue Vinyl w/ Black & White Splatters)
Netherlands | Death/Death 'n' Roll
Detailed Description
Five years after their brutal debut "Mindloss," Gorefest released "False" and "Erase." The latter set off a transformation culminating in "Soul Survivor," marked by changes in the mid-'90s, a trend seen in many death metal bands. Lead guitarist Boudewijn Bonebakker guided the band towards a Death N' Roll sound, influenced by his passion for '70s Hard Rock. "Soul Survivor" features remnants of death metal, blending Jan-Chris De Koeijer's semi-growls with '70s-inspired hard rock riffs. The addition of Rene Merkelback on organ, piano, and Mellotron enhances the stony yet stirring vibe. While revealing influences from DEEP PURPLE, THIN LIZZY, UFO, and AC/DC, the album retains a gruesome edge. Gorefest's shift towards accessibility and memorable melodies, notably in Bonebakker's lead guitar work, contrasts with their earlier technical style. "Soul Survivor" includes tracks like the darkened "Demon Seed," heavy stomper "Blood Is Thick," classic Rock-into-Metal piece "Soul Survivor," and the bonus track "Tired Moon," blending Rock with a death metal spirit.
