Destruction's beloved debut album, "Infernal Overkill," first released in 1985, marked a significant step for the German thrash metal legend. Following their EP "Sentence of Death" the year prior, the band was still finding its footing while balancing day jobs and music as a hobby. "Infernal Overkill" showcased a more refined style with added speed and ferocity, shedding some of the heavy metal influences that characterized "Sentence of Death." The band consciously aimed for greater brutality. Recorded in Berlin, the process went much smoother, thanks to improved organization and experience. The album managed to be both catchy and inventive, with a blend of aggression and intricacy that defined their evolving thrash sound. Two songs from the demo, "Antichrist" and "Tormentor," were included on the album but with improved leads, solos, and vocals. Despite some mixed initial reactions, it marked a significant milestone in Destruction's career, propelling them forward in the burgeoning thrash metal scene. "Infernal Overkill" introduced the band's iconic logo and skull imagery, which have since become their enduring trademarks. Alongside "The Antichrist," it remains one of their most successful albums.
