Uncanny takes charge on the A side with a potent blend of death metal, drawing influence from legends like Carnage, Dismember, Merciless, and early Grave and Unleashed. Their sound is intensified by raw grindcore touches reminiscent of Repulsion and Carcass. Right from the first note, Uncanny delivers gruff vocals paired with a low, rumbling guitar tone, while relentless drumming drives the energy forward. The tracks oscillate between blistering speed and crushing slow sections, all drenched in malevolence and aggression. Subtle, haunting keyboards emerge at key moments, adding layers to the murky atmosphere, perfectly captured by an underground production that enhances the band’s gritty edge.

On the B side, Ancient Rites brings their own blend of old-school black metal, drawing from the likes of Venom, Bathory, and Hellhammer, combined with early death/thrash influences from Agressor (FRA) and Merciless (SWE). They carve out a sound that predates the Scandinavian wave, standing apart with a mix of frantic speed, slower, mood-driven segments, and twisted melodies. The distorted vocals only deepen the sense of unease and intensity. Though the drum sound could have been a bit fuller, the raw production gives the entire performance an obscure, underground vibe, fitting for the era and the band’s style.

This split captures the essence of the early 90s underground scene, a time when extreme metal was still forging its path without strict boundaries. Both bands balance aggression with atmosphere, creating a release that feels as authentic as it is powerful. For fans of old-school underground metal, this one comes highly recommended!
