New York-based death metal outfit ARTIFICIAL BRAIN was formed in 2011 by guitarist Dan Gargiulo (Revocation) and vocalist Will Smith, formerly of Biolich—a band whose dissolution would eventually lead to the formation of CASTEVET by several of its members. Following a demo and a two-track EP, ARTIFICIAL BRAIN unveiled their crushing full-length debut, Labyrinth Constellation—a release that immediately positioned them among the most forward-thinking acts in the U.S. death metal underground.
Drawing inspiration from bands like Nocturnus, ARTIFICIAL BRAIN fuse a dense, dissonant style of brutal death metal with warped sci-fi themes—both musically and visually, as captured by Paolo "Madman" Girardi’s otherworldly cover artwork. The band’s cosmic horror atmosphere, guttural vocal onslaughts, and jagged riff structures are elevated by the meticulous production of Colin Marston (Gorguts, Krallice, Dysrhythmia), who recorded, mixed, and mastered the album at The Thousand Caves.
Labyrinth Constellation stands as a defining statement: an alien and cerebral entry in the genre that sits comfortably alongside the twisted death metal vanguard of Profound Lore Records, joining the ranks of PORTAL, MITOCHONDRION, GRAVE MIASMA, ABYSSAL, AUROCH, and CHTHE’ILIST.
