This episode opens with a surveillance drone—part clone, part machine—orbiting Mithril, a frigid, remote world in the Sword Worlds subsector. The drone’s creator is none other than the exiled Professor Ricket: a once-brilliant mind now twisted by obsession and mutation, living as a half-Vargr (carnivore chaser stock) aboard his hidden asteroid-ship known only as The Rock. From the shadows, Ricket schemes vengeance against the Zhodani Consulate, using his research into psionics to turn their own psychological arsenal against them. But his true obsession remains unchanged: finding and reclaiming his greatest experiment—his former ally turned rival—Baltech Budapest.
Baltech, now trapped in a half-human, half-Vargr form, has gone into hiding on Mithril, burrowed deep beneath the surface in the Ephemeral Glades. These glades are a marvel of alien ecology: frozen pools that lie dormant under layers of ice until the temperature rises just enough to awaken life. In a matter of hours, shoots pierce the snow, flowers bloom, insects swarm, and small reptiles emerge to breed in a chaotic explosion of life—only to vanish again when the cold returns.
During one such fleeting thaw, the drone catches a signal from Baltech’s subterranean lair. A transmission is sent. Reinforcements are en route.
Now, Baltech must choose: escape the Ephemeral Glades and flee Mithril—or be captured and forced to lead Professor Ricket’s twisted vision of a new Vargr-hybrid race.
