Detailed Description
First mCD release, now presented with newly remastered audio and slightly extended versions of each track. Released by Northern Heritage.

A curious and compelling outlier in the Satanic Warmaster discography, Black Katharsis stands as a raw, introspective detour that reveals a different side of this notorious Finnish black metal entity. Eschewing the overt aggression of later works, this EP embraces minimalism and mood, channeling a colder, more measured energy that sits somewhere between the melodic grimness of early Baptism and the spectral atmospheres of Cosmic Church.

While the production is undeniably lo-fi, it never veers into the unlistenable. In fact, there's a stark charm to the contrast between the muffled, brittle guitars and the surprisingly clear, present drums. Vocals are delivered with restraint—lacking the harsh peaks of previous recordings—allowing the music's subdued melodies to take the forefront. It's not the most immediate or anthemic entry in the Warmaster catalog, but that seems entirely by design.

“Remembrance of Times Forgotten” opens the EP with a steady, hypnotic pace, its riffs gently melodic yet curiously neutral in tone—neither triumphant nor despairing. “Cursed Emperor” ramps up the intensity with slightly more urgency and bite, showing glimpses of the band’s familiar ferocity while still staying within the EP's overall tempered mood. The closing track, “...Hiljaisuudesta,” leans furthest into abstraction, a slow and drifting piece that leaves interpretation wide open.

The strength of Black Katharsis lies not in overwhelming power or melodic grandeur, but in its ability to evoke something subtle—something quietly unsettling. It’s less about destruction and more about contemplation, a spiritual exhale between storms. While it may not leave a permanent mark in the way that Strength and Honour did, this short release is far from filler. For listeners intrigued by the more atmospheric fringes of the Finnish scene, or those seeking a deeper cut that reveals Warmaster’s nuanced approach to black metal, Black Katharsis is a rewarding listen.
