MERCILESS’ debut album The Awakening erupted in 1990 as the very first release on Euronymous’ newly founded and soon-to-be-infamous label, Deathlike Silence Productions. Before crafting that legendary death/thrash milestone, MERCILESS sharpened their blades with two early demos—Behind the Black Door (1987) and Realm of the Dark (1988). Raw and unrefined, these recordings compensate for their primitive sound with sheer ferocity and youthful intensity, capturing the band in its formative state.
These demos stand as crucial documents of Swedish metal history, offering a glimpse into the underground spirit that helped forge a path for pioneering acts like OBSCURITY and MORBID, laying the foundation for Sweden’s—and ultimately the world’s—black and death metal movement.
