Straightforward Finnish black metal of the highest order. Wakboth, the ultimate riffmaster behind Utgard and the Werewolf Records-era Azazel, has led this namesake project since 1995. Pohjolan Ydintalvi (roughly translated as Nuclear Winter of the North) is a full-scale war campaign: spiteful vocals, hard-driving, deep-drilling riffs, face-smashing percussion, and haunting ambient interludes. A fitting soundtrack to salute the mushroom clouds looming on the northern horizon.
The production is particularly powerful, captured in a professional studio with clarity and force. Elegant artwork by Nucleart Design completes the presentation. No trendy gimmicks here, this is raw, authentic black metal rooted in the proud, old-school tradition.
