WULDORGAST are a new formation within the Order of the Broken Sword circle, which also includes labelmates LURING and AZATHOTH'S DREAM. Like those bands, WULDORGAST represent one of the most exciting developments in American black metal in recent years: a fiercely classicist form that avoids leaning too heavily on familiar idioms, while still acknowledging its lineage.
Their first public work, the full-length Cold Light, delivers just that. Vaguely eldritch in its Scandinavian leanings—but not the obvious touchstones—the duo’s black metal is both ass-kicking and atmospheric, at once martial and recklessly rowdy. First impressions might recall late ’90s Darkthrone or early 2000s Carpathian Forest, but dig deeper and the spirit aligns closer with cult acts such as Tangorodrim, Thesyre, Torka, and especially Germany’s unsung Graupel. These aren’t the most overused references, and WULDORGAST channel them in a way that captures the essence rather than simply the result.
The approach is stripped down to bare-knuckled fundamentals, then built back up with a triumphant delirium fueled by blood, alcohol, and a surplus of heraldic leads—lending the music its own distinct character. No more, no less: Cold Light is real BLACK METAL for real black metal people.
