New York City-based death metal quintet HYPOXIA—featuring current and former members of Monstrosity, Vile, Secrecy, Castrator, Total Fucking Destruction, and more—returns with their third full-length album, Defiance. Set for release this February via Selfmadegod Records, the label now unveils the album’s cover art, full track listing, preorders, and a lyric video for the lead single, “Bleed for Blasphemy.”
Formed in 2008 by drummer Carolina Perez and guitarist Carlos Arboleda, HYPOXIA draws sonic inspiration from legends such as Sepultura, Death, Vader, Sinister, and Suffocation. Their debut demo The Purge (2011) and follow-up EP Public Execution (2013) gained strong traction in the underground, paving the way for their first full-length, Despondent Death (2015, Ultimate Massacre Productions), and the ferocious Abhorrent Disease (2019, Selfmadegod Records).
Renowned for their intense and aggressive live performances, HYPOXIA has taken the stage across the U.S. and South America—including appearances at Soul Metalfest, Las Vegas Deathfest, and Rock Al Parque 2018—sharing bills with titans like Suffocation, Cattle Decapitation, Dark Tranquillity, Dark Funeral, Diabolic, Obituary, Onslaught, Razor, Masacre, Embalmer, Exumer, Malevolent Creation, Derketa, and many others.
Defiance sees HYPOXIA emerge from a period of lineup changes with their most punishing and focused material to date. Across eleven blistering tracks in thirty-seven relentless minutes, the band delivers an old-school-meets-modern death metal assault. The apocalyptic riffing and divebomb solos of Carlos Arboleda (Non Eternal, ex-Secrecy, ex-Aether) and new guitarist Ryan Moll (Rumpelstiltskin Grinder, Azure Emote, Total Fucking Destruction) ride atop the seismic rhythm section of Carolina Perez (Castrator, ex-Aether) and new bassist Mike Poggione (ex-Monstrosity, ex-Capharnaum, Omnipotence). At the forefront, Mike Hrubovcak (Azure Emote, Imperial Crystalline Entombment, ex-Monstrosity, ex-Vile) delivers ferocious vocal performances that tear through the chaos.
Defiance was recorded by the band, mixed and mastered by Noah Buchanan at Mercinary Studios (Midnight, Embalmer, Nunslaughter), and features artwork by Daemorph (The Black Dahlia Murder, Pyrexia, Avulsed).
