The self-titled album by Swedish death metal legends DISMEMBER was originally released in 2008. It stands out in the band's discography as the only album not featuring their mastermind, drummer, and producer Fred Estby. Despite his absence, the album concluded the first chapter of DISMEMBER's history on a high note. Vocalist Matti Kärki delivers a rabid performance, with punishing grooves in tracks like 'Europa Burns' and 'Dark Depths,' alongside brilliant melodic parts in songs such as 'Under a Blood Red Sky' and 'Black Sun.'
Dismember showcases crushing death metal, highlighted by extended riffing and impressive guitar solos. This album is heavier and darker than their previous work, yet it retains enough melody and groove to balance the intense barrage. While the music can be very brutal, DISMEMBER skillfully incorporates interesting elements and arrangements into their songwriting.
Matti Kärki stands out as an excellent vocalist, delivering powerful growls filled with emotion. He varies his delivery to avoid monotony and maintains a level of clarity uncommon in death metal vocalists. Dismember is another solid effort from an old-school death metal band that rarely disappoints.
