MANOWAR is an American heavy metal band from Auburn, New York, formed in 1980. Renowned for their thunderous sound and lyrics steeped in fantasy and mythology, they have earned a reputation for pushing the boundaries of volume and intensity. In 1984, they entered the Guinness Book of World Records for delivering the loudest performance—a record they have since broken twice. They also hold the world record for the longest heavy metal concert, having played for an astonishing five hours and one minute at Bulgaria's Kavarna Rock Fest in 2008.
Fiercely devoted to their "true metal" ethos, MANOWAR have championed the slogan "Death to false metal" and cultivated a dedicated global fanbase, known as Metal Warriors, Manowarriors, Immortals, and Brothers of Metal. In 1987, they signed with Atlantic Records and released Fighting the World, which expanded their reach and solidified their place in the international heavy metal scene. The album featured artwork by the legendary Ken Kelly.
Their 1988 release, Kings of Metal, remains their most iconic work, featuring anthems like "Heart of Steel," "Kings of Metal," and "Hail and Kill", all of which remain concert staples. It is also their best-selling album worldwide.
Following lineup changes, MANOWAR released The Triumph of Steel in 1992, achieving significant success. The album is particularly notable for the epic 28-minute suite "Achilles, Agony and Ecstasy in Eight Parts," inspired by The Iliad and the legendary warrior Achilles. This release was followed by a two-year world tour, further cementing their legendary status.
With a discography filled with battle hymns and powerful storytelling, MANOWAR's albums remain essential in any heavy metal collection.
