Detailed Description

Limited to 777 copies on black vinyl.

The Jaertegn split EP brings together two titans of Norwegian black metal, Taake and Deathcult, for a blistering display of raw, uncompromising artistry. Released through Edged Circle Productions, this four-track release captures the essence of the genre while offering fresh perspectives from both bands.

Taake’s contribution opens the EP with “Slagmark,” a nearly seven-minute odyssey that showcases Hoest’s unparalleled ability to weave melody into chaos. The track’s structure is intricate, seamlessly blending grim, mid-tempo passages with moments of melancholic introspection. True to Taake’s form, the song takes unexpected twists, incorporating acoustic interludes and atmospheric layers that elevate it beyond a straightforward black metal assault. It’s a testament to Hoest’s genius, evoking the spirit of Taake’s earlier works while presenting something distinctly new.

Their rendition of Darkthrone’s “Ravnajuv” follows, paying homage to the overlooked gem from Total Death. Taake’s version captures the raw, minimalist essence of the original while injecting their signature touch. The track feels like a time capsule, preserving the spirit of 90s Norwegian black metal while breathing new life into it.

On the flip side, Deathcult unleashes unrelenting fury with “Der Würger.” This track is an explosion of raw aggression, propelled by razor-sharp tremolo riffs and a punishing rhythm section. Skagg’s vocals are feral and commanding, perfectly complementing the track’s militant tone. The song crescendos into a climactic finish, showcasing Deathcult’s mastery of crafting anthemic yet savage black metal.

Closing the EP, Deathcult takes on Beherit’s “Black Arts,” a track steeped in primeval darkness. Their interpretation remains faithful to the original’s raw, unholy energy while amplifying its oppressive atmosphere. The guttural vocals and primitive production evoke the ritualistic essence of early 90s black metal, solidifying this cover as a standout moment on the release.

Jaertegn is more than a split; it’s a testament to the enduring power and versatility of Norwegian black metal. Taake and Deathcult each bring their unique strengths to the table, resulting in an EP that is both nostalgic and forward-thinking. For fans of the genre, this is an essential listen—proof that black metal’s fire continues to burn brightly in Bergen and beyond.
