Burzum is arguably the most important band to emerge from Norway's infamous second wave of black metal. Following the release of his self-titled debut album and the notorious "Aske" EP, Varg Vikernes unveiled his second offering, "Det Som Engang Var," in 1993. While his debut and the "Aske" EP are both seminal works that are essential listening for any black metal enthusiast, "Det Som Engang Var" marks a further descent into darker, more ambient-influenced territory. This album serves as a precursor to the pinnacle sound achieved on "Hvis Lyset Tar Oss," with the intro track from that later album even borrowing its name from the title of this one.
The first pressing of "Det Som Engang Var" on Cymophane Productions was initially intended for distribution by Voices Of Wonder in 1993. However, nearly the entire pressing was returned to Varg Vikernes (Grishnack) following his arrest for the murder of Euronymous (Oystein Aarseth). "Det Som Engang Var," Norwegian for "What Once Was," is the second studio album by Burzum, recorded in April 1992 and released in August 1993 through Burzum's own label, Cymophane Productions, and has since been reissued on Varg's Byelobog Productions.
This album is a landmark in black metal, embodying Burzum's signature mix of hatred and tragedy while integrating more melodic and atmospheric elements. Despite these additions, it remains quintessential black metal. Burzum's music is distinguished by its diversity and uniqueness compared to other first-wave black metal bands, ensuring its enduring legacy and continued influence in the genre.
