When Exorcist released their sole album "Nightmare Theatre" through Cobra Records in 1986, it sparked widespread confusion. Who were these enigmatic musicians seemingly emerging from the shadows? And who exactly comprised the band? With all members using pseudonyms and no band photo on the sleeve, the album left fans and critics alike pondering its authenticity. Was "Nightmare Theatre" a groundbreaking death metal masterpiece or an intricate ruse?

Decades later, the truth emerged when David DeFeis, the renowned vocalist of Virgin Steele, revealed his involvement. Not only did he oversee the album's mix, but he also conceived the entire concept and delivered the lead vocals. Despite the mystery shrouding Exorcist's identity, "Nightmare Theatre" swiftly garnered cult status within the underground metal scene upon its release.

Reflecting on the project's origins, DeFeis reminisces about the recording process, which occurred during a brief window of studio time between Virgin Steele sessions. Despite the tight schedule, the album materialized swiftly, with DeFeis crafting interlude pieces using unconventional instruments like aluminum foil and hammers to evoke a chilling ambiance.

Inspired by his fascination with horror films and historical events such as the Salem Witch Trials, DeFeis delved into themes of witchcraft and supernatural phenomena for "Nightmare Theatre." He meticulously penned the album's lyrics, drawing from his lifelong interest in the subject matter.

While Exorcist's sound may not have aligned closely with the burgeoning death and black metal scenes of the era, DeFeis acknowledges the influence of bands like Venom and Bathory. However, he emphasizes that Exorcist pursued its own creative path, unconstrained by genre conventions.

Contrary to speculation, Exorcist was not merely a passing project or a hoax band. DeFeis and his cohorts approached the endeavor with seriousness and dedication, meticulously crafting each song with an eye toward longevity.

Despite never performing live under the Exorcist moniker, DeFeis hints at the possibility of a second album, with unreleased tracks already in existence. The decision to reissue "Nightmare Theatre" stemmed from numerous offers over the years, culminating in an opportunity to give the album the attention it deserves.

Ultimately, the reissue aims to honor the legacy of "Nightmare Theatre," ensuring that it receives the recognition it merits as a seminal work within the metal genre.
