Hailing from Mexico City, Fumes is a black metal outfit that unleashes its debut offering with a raw and unrelenting fury. Despite sharing a name with a Canadian death metal band, Fumes carves its own path of sonic devastation. The EP offers a glimpse into their infernal realm, showcasing two blistering tracks separated by a short instrumental interlude.
The opening track, "Pleguestorms," sets the tone with its gritty guitar tones and hints of black/death metal influences. Led by guitarist Alanís I.'s fierce vocals, the song is a relentless barrage of hatred and chaotic energy, avoiding the typical black metal squawk for a more powerful delivery.
"Dead Morning Star" continues in a similarly primitive vein, ramping up the speed and intensity with hammering drums and dissonant guitars. While Fumes doesn't tread new ground with their sound, they excel in creating a cavernous and hostile atmosphere, perfect for accompanying nocturnal forays into ancient forests.
This EP may not reveal all of Fumes' secrets, but it serves as a tantalizing preview of what they have to offer. Fans can look forward to a potential full-length release, and it will be intriguing to see if the band explores mid-tempo structures in the future, as such shifts could enhance the sinister nature of their sound.
