BURIAL SHRINE stands defiantly against a world determined to crush the human spirit. Within adversity lies strength, and BURIAL SHRINE emerges as a monument to the death of the self and the profound unity of the spirit—an ascent ever deeper to achieve greater heights.
Formed in Vancouver, Canada, in early 2014 by EH, CXM, and RW, BURIAL SHRINE was conceived with a singular purpose: to create raw and ferocious Black Metal. By spring of that year, the band had crafted four tracks for an intended demo. However, the demo was ultimately shelved, and the following years were marked by relentless refinement—reworking material, discarding riffs, scrapping songs, and abandoning entire concepts until their vision fully crystallized.
In the spring and summer of 2017, after a period of intense creative solitude, new material emerged, and older tracks were transformed into their final forms. This evolution was driven by a harrowing process of self-mortification, from which arose an unyielding resolve to channel and release an overwhelming darkness. The recording process, imbued with this raw intensity, spanned from the winter of 2017 to the spring of 2018.
A host of guest and session musicians contributed to expanding the album's dimensions. CM (Spell, Reversed) provided bass, while TS (Ahna, Starvation) delivered searing lead guitars. The title track features haunting violin by Terence O'Shea (Griefwalker) and a mesmerizing solo composed and performed by MT (Paths, Teeth of the Wolf). Lyrics for this track were penned by Johannes Nefastos, further deepening its thematic resonance.
The album’s evocative artwork was conjured by Casper Macabre, perfectly complementing the atmospheric ferocity of BURIAL SHRINE’s sound.
