In 1993, amidst the heyday of the second wave—when numerous classic albums saw the light of day and many a blaze ignited the northern sky—Gehenna was formed in Stavanger, Norway’s fourth-largest city.
That same year, their efforts culminated in their first and only demo, Black Seared Heart, self-released on tape in very limited quantities. The demo consists of seven tracks, including three instrumentals that serve as intros and outros.
While the demo reflects the members’ limited musical capabilities at the time, it remains a thoroughly enjoyable debut with lasting qualities. The sound quality far surpasses that of a typical demo, as Black Seared Heart was recorded in a professional studio. The moody compositions—mostly played at a moderate tempo—highlight Gehenna’s natural songwriting talent, even in their earliest days.
Notably, the demo already features the band’s trademark keyboard melodies, which would go on to define their sound in later releases.
As an added bonus, the reissue of Black Seared Heart includes an instrumental track, a rehearsal-room recording, and—most importantly—a previously aborted studio session that was initially intended to result in their debut EP, First Spell.
