Perpetually out of print, much sought after, and universally worshipped among those in the know, Winter’s Into Darkness is a game-changing classic.
Formed in New York circa 1988, Winter played slow, deep, and hard nuclear doom with a crust punk rawness—sounding like Hellhammer jamming with Amebix. Their penchant for mammoth-sized, funeral-paced, wasteland-droning epics has become a touchstone for bands across the entire spectrum of underground metal.
Long before the internet era, their infamy spread through tape-traded demos, revered in cult-like fashion by fans and bands alike—earning notable devotees such as Fenriz from Darkthrone. Deserving of their place in the pantheon of one-off classic albums, the Swans-like noise and down-tuned, Earth-like riffs of Into Darkness went on to influence an entire doomed generation of sludge and doom bands.
Winter’s comeback performance at Roadburn Festival in 2011 was massively anticipated, packing one of the Netherlands’ largest stages. That rare appearance, after years in obscurity, remains a legendary moment among devotees of the genre.
The band holds a near-mythical status among collectors and fans alike. Into Darkness was a gateway drug into the abyss of sludge and doom, and now it awaits a new generation of acolytes ready to bow before the throne of heavy doom.
Svart Records is proud to bring Into Darkness back into print once more. Eternal Winter awaits.
