What a great album. Anyone listening to black metal or early thrash should listen to this record. Purely Venom inspired. And don't let Quorthon's kickass interview in 85 fool you. Venom's influence is all over this record song titles, album cover, lyrical themes ect., not to mention Quorthon let it slip in the 1987 interview when he claimed that he listened to Venom's Black Metal album three months after he formed the band which was a full year before he recorded this debut. He also expressed how much he loved that album in that interview. That being said, Bathory's first album is essential listening in the first wave of black metal with great riffs and evil sounding production. Check it out. You won't be disappointed.
Bathory''s self titled debut was a pinnacle in black metal history. When it first came out, people wrote them off as a poor Venom rip off, but looking back most people realized that most bands were a poor version of a previous band, and an influence is all it too to change and create a whole new genre. Bathory did this well with this first outing. The majority of black metal releases up until recently have a direct influence from these first Bathory releases. There is no room for improvement as Bathory set the standard here. If you are reading this review on this website as it is, you know what this is all about. If you're new, and curious, Bathory should be the first in any underground metal collection.
