Autopsy, one of the early pioneers of U.S. death metal, formed in 1987 in San Francisco. The band released four albums on Peaceville Records, starting with their classic debut, Severed Survival, in 1989, before disbanding in 1995. Following the split, members went on to form the band Abscess.
After a 15-year hiatus, Autopsy made a triumphant return with the 2010 EP, The Tomb Within, to the delight of critics and fans alike. Their comeback was marked by headlining performances at Maryland Deathfest, PartySan, and Hole in the Sky, featuring Dan Lilker (of Brutal Truth and Nuclear Assault) on bass. The band was met with a rapturous reception from both longtime fans and a new generation of metal enthusiasts.
In February 2011, Autopsy entered Fantasy Studios with producer Adam Munoz to record Macabre Eternal, their long-awaited fifth album. The original trio of Chris Reifert, Danny Coralles, and Eric Cutler was joined by bassist Joe Trevisano (of Abscess and Von fame) to deliver another dose of uncompromising death metal brutality. The release will be supported by additional festival appearances across Europe and the U.S. in 2011.
Autopsy is notably led by legendary drummer and vocalist Chris Reifert, who began his recording career with death metal pioneers Death before taking on the dual role of drums and vocals in Autopsy. The band has influenced a generation of extreme metal acts, including Entombed, Dismember, and Darkthrone, and remains one of the most respected names in the genre's history.
